Kitchen Interior Design Trends 2022

Create the perfect kitchen in 2022 with styling trends as reported by our trade professional members.

Kitchen Layout

The limitations of living and working in an open plan kitchen during the pandemic have moved homeowners to want flexible zoned areas also known as 'broken plan' layout.

This trend is expected to continue in 2022 with many homeowners seeking to retrofit their open planned areas by installing screens or adding shelving.

Our builders are also seeing a growing trend of freestanding kitchen islands replaced with kitchen peninsulas - where one end of the workspace is attached to a wall forming an ‘L shape. Kitchen peninsulas are handy to maximise kitchen floor space and divide an area without closing it off.

Minimalist Style

While the shaker frame remains popular, our kitchen joiners & carpenters report that a pared-back minimalist style is inspiring more and more Irish homeowners.

A minimalist style is further enhanced by concealing cooking spaces with door panels blending seamlessly, complete with fingerprint opening and closing sensors.

Green Tones

If anyone has flicked through a kitchen or interiors magazine lately, you’d be noting dark navy tones and even black kitchens gracing the pages with kitchen suppliers also confirming that requests for darker colours have flooded their order books in 2021.

However, our painters & decorators are now seeing a trend shift to green hues (from sage green to deep forest greens) while mixing it up with two tones continues to stay popular.

Dimmable Layered Lighting

Electrical jobs posted on our service for recessed directional lighting is expected to remain popular for homeowners in 2022.

Recessed lighting layered with pendants and wall lights is the key to adding character and also a brilliant way to zone your lighting for cooking, dining and lounging areas.

If you want dimmable lighting, always chat an electrician well in advance of a kitchen renovation to ensure you get the right bulbs, circuit and dimmer switches for the job.

Finally, brushed chrome, antique brass or satin chrome inner finishes are popular pendant options, especially when paired with dark navy kitchen finishes.

Pattern Flooring

In 2021, our flooring specialists have been inundated with requests for herringbone pattern design in kitchens, hallways and other spaces and we expect to see this trend continue into 2022.

With the rise in solid and engineered wood flooring prices, more homeowners are opting for faux flooring options like imitation wood laminate. The good news is that laminate options are cheaper but fortunately don’t skimp on quality, variety, and style.

Pattern Stone Worktops

Getting the right worktop is key to bringing your whole kitchen design together.

Therefore, you might be delighted to know that kitchen stone surfaces have come down in price since the heady days of the Celtic Tiger.

Now that more homeowners can afford stone surfaces like Quartz or Solid Surface (premium engineered countertops) bold strongly veined patterns are trending.

Textured Splashbacks

Slab splashbacks are set to trend in 2022, offering an instant focal point with an uninterrupted wall of the same stone that adorns the kitchen worktops.

However, the popularity of tiled splashbacks will continue with our tiling specialists reporting a growing trend for bold colours options and textured feature tiles.
