'I pride mself on a friendly service and keep in touch with customers, good communication goes a long way.'

Paul Geoghegan, Garden Flowers

OLT: Hi Paul, tell us a bit about yourself and how you started your business Garden Flowers and where you interest in gardneing came from:

PG: Hi, I'm Paul from Garden Flowers and I'm based in Dublin.
Although I trained many years ago as a chef, I've always had a keen interest in gardening and had some land which I could work on. Eventually the pull of being outdoors and pursuing my passion for plants and gardens was too strong. I'd been working away myself on my own garden, even as a child I loved planting and flowers. Over the years I gained more experience doing decking and paving, things like that. I have a polytunnel so started to grow plants on a bigger scale and going into business just seemed like the next natural step. It's been the best move I ever made.  I started by selling flowers hence the name 'Garden Flowers' and then started doing planting for clients. As I gained more skills and experience, I started to do more and can now offer a range of services including everything from hedge cutting, garden maintenance, planting, garden clearouts to powerwashing.  I've built up repeat customers some of whom have well-established gardens and need help with ongoing maintenance.

OLT: What type of jobs do you love? Are there any projects that stand out?
PG: The jobs I love are often the ones no-one else wants to do - I really enjoy doing garden clearouts - often a homeowner will feel overwhelmed, not sure where to start. I'm happy to get stuck in and of course having the right tools helps!  Homeowners are often relieved to have it done and delighted with the results

One stand out project, was one I did over an extended period of time to cultivate a forest walk pathway where I put in the pathways, created the flowerbeds and did all the planting.  I was very happy with the result. I still go back to help the customer when required.

OLT:  Have you any advice you'd pass onto someone else starting out?
PG:  For me, I'd say no job is too small. In fact one small job can turn into repeat business. But I'm mindful not to take on more than I can handle. If needs be I'll call in expertise if I cannot provide it for, example tree surgeons for larger trees and hedges.

OLT: What about getting that repeat business? How do maintain a good working relationship with customers?
PG: I pride mself on a friendly service and keep in touch with customers, good communication goes a long way, texts are so handy for that. Also I don't overpromise, if something is beyond my scope I'll discuss it with the customer and do my best to find someone with the right skills.
My plant knowledge has really stood to me with advising customers on selecting the right plants for their space and taking into account their knowledge and interest in gardening. There's no point planting something they like the look of only to find out it needs alot of attention so I'll do my best to suggest appropriate choices.
Also their time - many people just don't have the time to put into a garden but that's where I come in and can offer maintenance on an ongoing basis so they can enjoy the beauty of their outdoor space without having to spend all their sparetime working in the garden. The Covid pandemic has definitely made everyone more appreciative of their outdoor spaces plus there's a growing interest in gardening sustainably.

OLT: And finally, one last question - how has Onlinetradesmen helped your business?
PG:  I'm now with Onlinetradesmen over a year. I'm delighted with the new customers I've found using the service and the job sizes have been perfect for me. It's there when I need it and it's not that expensive, I think it's great value for what I get in return.

OLT: Great to chat today - thanks Paul.
PG: Thank you!
