Survey Reveals Mental Health Crisis in Construction Industry

A recent survey reveals a mental health crisis in the construction industry, with over half of workers facing challenges. Anxiety, depression, fatigue, and lack of self-confidence are prevalent.

According to a recent survey by UK software provider Causeway Technologies, a staggering 56% of construction workers have faced mental health challenges. The comprehensive study, led by mental health ambassador and former England footballer Trevor Steven, engaged with over 1,400 workers across construction sites nationwide over an 18-month period.

These alarming findings highlight the urgent need for intervention in the construction industry's mental health landscape. Among the surveyed construction workers, 40% reported anxiety, 37% reported depression, 28% reported fatigue, and 25% each reported a lack of self-confidence and feeling overwhelmed.

Shockingly, 12% of respondents admitted to experiencing or having experienced suicidal thoughts. Trevor Steven expressed concern over the results, stating, "These figures are frankly shocking and really highlight the need for intervention."

Key factors contributing to poor mental health among construction workers include long and irregular working hours (59%), financial pressures (50%), lack of job security (45%), tight deadlines (43%), and site culture (41%).

An overwhelming 80% of respondents believe that companies should bear the responsibility for supporting the mental health of their workers. However, a significant 35% feel that their workplaces are falling short in safeguarding employee wellbeing.

One construction worker lamented, "In 10 years of working in construction, I’ve never experienced a site that seems to really care about your mental well-being."
