OLT: Hi Joe, tell us a bit about yourself and how you started as a floorer: 

Joe: I have been in the flooring business for a good while, and established Hyland Flooring in 2007. The demand for quality flooring professionals has been growing over the years, and my business has benefited from this growth. I am also lucky that I love the job, so it’s a win-win.

OLT: What do you love about flooring, are there any types of jobs or projects you especially enjoy?

Joe: Floor restoration is very exciting.

Uncovering original floorboards, hidden by carpet or tiling and restoring to a high-quality finish gives me great satisfaction. Being able to transform a room with new look floor is also a job I really enjoy.

Couple of years ago, a light Scandi floor finish was trending (it’s still a popular look) so with applying the right products and technique it’s always a pleasure to finish a job to a customer’s specifications.

Right now, the herringbone style is what many homeowners are after. It’s a lovely finish, but it is a labour-intensive process and more expensive. If a homeowner does have to compromise due to price, I can’t stress enough that wide-board planks won’t disappoint and is generally less expensive to install.

OLT: We can see from your 5-star ratings you’ve lots of happy customers. How do you go about ensuring that 5-star rating?
Joe: Communication is the key.

A first meeting with any client is all about listening to what they are trying to achieve and for me to provide the best advice based on budget and finish.

I always aim to arrive on-time, keep the workspace clean and organised and provide the highest quality finish.

I also aim to provide a good value service and while I might not always be the cheapest quote, my clients are never disappointed with the result.

OLT: Have you any advice to someone else starting out? 
Joe: Recognising your strengths is key to starting any business. Always seek support along the way when needed and stay focused.

OLT: What lessons have you learnt since starting your own business?
Joe: To do the best work and always be honest. Getting things wrong is always part of the any business start-up but learning from mistakes and moving on is what I have learnt through the years.

OLT: How did you manage to stay afloat during the last recession?
Joe: The last recession was challenging for everyone in the business, however I kept focused on existing and referral work. If you provide a quality service, you will always find yourself busy.
