Grants Reduced for Solar PV: Important Changes Starting January 1, 2024

Important change to Irish solar grants: Starting Jan 1, 2024, the maximum grant allowance will decrease by €300 to €2,100. Act now to secure higher grants and contribute to a greener future.

Property owners across Ireland, take note! Significant changes are on the horizon for the Domestic Solar PV grant, administered by the Sustainable Authority of Ireland (SEAI).

As of January 1, 2024, the grant will be reduced by €300, bringing the maximum allowance down to €2,100. This adjustment is part of the planned installment cuts outlined in the Micro-Generation Support Scheme, signaling a shift in government support for residential solar panels.

Details of the Change:

The Department for the Environment has confirmed this reduction, emphasising that the grant was always intended to decrease gradually from 2024 onwards. According to the Micro-Generation Support Scheme, the maximum grant levels remained at €2,400 for 2022 and 2023. The reduction by up to €300 each subsequent year is anticipated until no grant support is required from 2029 onwards.

Impact on Solar Energy Industry:

This reduction has been met with disappointment, with industry experts expressing concerns about its potential impact. Ronan Power, Chief Executive of PINergy Solar Electric, noted that the cut could impede the progress made in solar energy in recent years. Despite the setback, Power highlighted the positive momentum gained, with 10,000 households supported last year and an expected 22,000 by the end of 2023.

Opportunities Amidst Challenges:

While the decrease in government incentives is disappointing, it's crucial to note that the reduced VAT on solar PV installations will remain in place. This presents homeowners with an ongoing opportunity to make environmentally friendly choices that are also economically sound, improving affordability and payback times.

Call to Action: Secure Your Higher Grant Now!

To make the most of the higher grant allowance before the reduction takes effect, homeowners are encouraged to act promptly. Grants secured by December 31 will maintain the current allowance and can be utilised throughout 2024 (within eight months of approval). Don't miss out on this opportunity to enhance your home's sustainability and contribute to national renewable energy targets.

Looking to the Future:

Despite the reduction in grants, the potential for solar PV adoption in Ireland remains significant. Approximately 1.3 million homes are capable of harnessing solar energy for their requirements. The continued support from both homeowners and governmental bodies is crucial to meeting renewable energy targets by 2030.
