That's where a qualified and insured tree surgeon comes in. With over a decade of experience in tree care and surgery, Luke Doyle from Olympian Landscaping is here to share his expert advice on the essentials of tree removal.

While homeowners often consider removing a tree when it blocks light or becomes too tall, Luke emphasises the need to be proactive. Recognising potential problems with trees on or near your property before they cause real damage is key.

One common issue Luke encounters is trees growing dangerously close to boundary walls and houses. Homeowners should take action against such problematic trees before it's too late.

"The planting of certain tree species, like Leylandii Conifers, Cupressus macrocarpa, and Sycamore, decades ago has now become a major problem for property owners," says Luke. "I've seen oversized trees intruding on walls and structures, even damaging house foundations and plumbing. Many of these expensive issues could've been avoided if action was taken earlier."

Understanding the Tree Removal Process

When it comes to tree removal, there are two main options to consider: tree removal and stump removal.

Tree removal involves cutting down the tree's body as close to the ground as possible. Once the tree and waste are removed, the stump remains. The stump can be treated with a herbicide to prevent new growth.

However, this treatment comes with risks, as it can affect not only the stump but also other areas of the garden. Luke explains, "Divots are made in the trunk, and herbicide is applied. This poison kills the stump and root ball. It takes about 4-6 weeks for the process to complete, and then the stump can be easily removed with an axe."

However, many homeowners are hesitant to use poison due to health concerns for pets and children.

The Preferred Option: Tree Stump Removal

In Luke's experience, homeowners often choose to completely remove the tree stump.

This involves felling the tree and using special tools like stump grinders to remove the root ball from the ground. "As with all tree and stump removals, the first step is to remove the crown of the tree."

"Depending on its size, this process may involve sectional tree felling. We use ropes and harnesses to access the canopy and cut using chainsaws and pruning shears."

Luke also notes that if the tree branches are a risk to power lines, ESB Networks Ireland will need to be contacted to cut off electricity during the work.

"When a tree removal coincides with garden landscaping, we often bring a mini-digger to the site, which makes the process quicker and easier. However, removing a tree typically takes about one day, depending on its size."

Understanding the Costs

If you need to reduce the height of a tree to control its growth, the cost can range from €500 to €800.

The cost of tree removal varies depending on the size of the tree. On average, it ranges from €800 for a medium-sized tree to as much as €2000 for larger varieties.

The accessibility of the tree also affects the cost. Poor access adds more time and complexity to the removal process.

If you choose to remove the tree stump, expect an additional cost of about €300-350, including the hire of a stump grinder. All pricing includes waste removal.
