Trade Profile: Introducing Greg Egar of Howth Decor

Meet Greg Egar, owner of Howth Decor, a professional painting and decorating business. Greg shares his experience, customer satisfaction approach, and favourite projects.

Welcome to our latest trade interview with Greg Egar, owner of Howth Decor, a professional painting and decorating business. Greg has been in the trade for over 20 years and has been working for himself for the past 15 years. In this interview, we'll learn more about Greg's experiences, approach to customer satisfaction and some of his favourite projects.

Onlinetradesmen (OLT): Hi Greg, thank you for taking the time out to speak with us today. Can you tell us a bit about the type of work you do?

Greg Egar: Hi, thank you for having me! I specialise in painting and decorating for both commercial and residential projects. However, our bread and butter are definitely private residences, both interior and exterior.

OLT: That's great to hear. What types of projects or jobs do you particularly enjoy working on?

Greg Egar: One of my favourite types of jobs is renovating rental apartments or houses. These types of properties can often be in a really bad state and being able to transform them into clean and nicely decorated units is really satisfying. I also really enjoy completely changing the colours and finishing in hall stairs and landings, sitting rooms and kitchens. It's always nice to see the transformation.

OLT: We couldn't agree more, seeing the transformation of a space is always satisfying. How do you approach a job to ensure customer satisfaction?

Greg Egar: When I start a project, I always make sure to liaise with the customer to fully understand what they're looking for and what their budget is. This helps me ensure that I deliver finished products that fulfil their expectations.

OLT: Very true, communication is key. Can you tell us about a project or job that really sticks out in your mind?

Greg Egar: One job that really sticks out for me is when we had the opportunity to paint Marino Church and St. Laurence Quay apartments in Howth last year. Both were a challenge between height and access. With careful planning and execution, I'm proud of both. It was a challenging and unique project, but it was such an amazing experience. Being able to work on a historic building like the Marino Church was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

OLT: Can you share the most important lesson you've learned in your career journey so far?

Greg Egar: Patience is a must-have quality in this industry. From colour matching to dealing with customers, everything counts.

OLT: That's an excellent point. How did you manage to survive during the recession?

Greg Egar: Hey, great question! Through sheer grit and determination. Even though we had to slash our prices, we did whatever it took to keep our customers happy and our business afloat.

OLT: So, what advice would you give to someone starting out in the trade?

Greg Egar: Well, first, it's crucial always to be willing to learn and grow, even when it gets stressful at times. If you can make it work, the rewards are worth it.

OLT: That's great to hear. Lastly, can you tell us how Onlinetradesmen has helped your business?

Greg Egar: Onlinetradesmen has been fantastic! I've gotten some of my best jobs and made a lot of new contacts through their service. I can't recommend them highly enough!

OLT: Thank you so much for your time today, Greg. Is there anything else you'd like to share with our readers?

Greg Egar: Yes, I would just like to say that we take great pride in being able to provide a high-quality service that exceeds our customer's expectations. We're a reliable, personable and professional team that is always willing to go the extra mile to ensure our customers are completely satisfied. Thank you again for having me.
