"Love what you do and you'll never work a day in your life. I love what I do!"

   Luke Wall, Olympian Landscaping

We love promoting our members, so this week we're profiling Luke Doyle, a qualified landscaper from Olympian Landscaping in Sandyford, Dublin. In this Q&A with Luke, we ask him a little about his background, how he became interested in Landscaping and how he delivers for his clients. Roll on Luke...

OLT: So how did you become interested in Landscaping?

LW: It's something I have always had a passion for. I love the outdoors and have always been creative, so Landscaping gives me the perfect opportunity to blend the two together.

OLT: How did you come about to be working for yourself at Olympian Landscaping?

LW: I qualified as a Landscaper in 2000. I worked for a number of Landscaping contractors as an employee both in Ireland, Australia and Canada before I set out on my own. It was a natural progression really to set up my own landscaping business.

OLT: That makes sense. So what were the differences in working in Australia and Canada over Ireland?

LW: Well obviously the weather for one! In Australia and Canada, the summer weather has extremely hot and energy-sapping. Australia in particular. That and the variety of flora was really different, which has been great for me to be able to leverage on more creative projects in Ireland. Home Owners in both countries tended to spend more time outdoors than in Ireland, so the variety and standards are a bit higher than here. I am grateful to have gained the experience and to be able to deliver those standards to customers here.

OLT: And what about the wildlife...

LW: Ah yeah, I had a couple of runs in's! Mainly with spiders and lizards. No snakes thankfully!

OLT: So you set up your own business in Ireland when?

LW: Back in 2008. Seems like a long time ago now.

OLT: Different times alright. How did you manage to get through the recession?

LW:  As you can imagine Home owners weren't spending a whole lot on Landscaping projects then. I had to work hard. I got a lot of referrals - enough to keep me afloat. I could have done with OnlineTradesmen.ie then! Luckily customers are very satisfied with our work, so they tend to tell their friends.

OLT: What is the biggest lesson you have learnt to date in business?

LW: That's an easy one. Do quality work and you will never be out of work.

OLT: And customer service?

LW: They go hand in hand. Talking things through with the customer and getting a feel for what they like is very important. At the end of the day the customer is paying for a service that has to be done right and to their liking. Our work speaks for itself where workmanship is involved. Once the customer knows they are in good hands they are always happy.

OLT: I guess we better ask you about the type of project you do! Nearly forgot...

LW: Was wondering when we'd get to that bit! We do complete garden overhauls, bespoke patios and driveways, garden maintenance contracts, tree trimming and tree surgery, fencing installations etc. Basically, if it is in the garden we have the knowledge and manpower for your project.

OLT: What are your favourite Landscaping projects and why?

LW: I would have to say complete garden overhauls. I like taking a project on from initial design conception right through to completion. There is a certain sense of accomplishment when the customer loves the finished product.

OLT: Any project that sticks out?

LW:  There are many! Some projects are more challenging than others which in my mind makes them stick out. I recall a patio and garden renovation project that needed to be completed in 3 days for a birthday party. It was a big ask but we did it.

OLT: What advice would you give to someone starting out now in the Landscaping trade?

LW: Never stop learning in your line of work. All industries continually change and develop with time. Be ahead of your competition.

OLT: Great stuff. Finally, Luke, how has OnlineTradesmen.ie helped your business?

LW: It has opened a new channel of work for my business. I am getting jobs that I simply wouldn't have been in the frame for before. I find it a very good resource for my business and I value that it promotes the services of professional and qualified tradesmen over unqualified ones.

OLT: Luke, thanks for your time and contribution.
