GKMP Architects - Ratings

We live in a Victorian house dating from 1882. We wanted to change a low-ceilinged bedroom which adjoins the family room into a sunroom. The new room is modern yet very sympathetic to the existing house. There is no disjoint between the Victorian family room with its bay window and the timber architecture of the sunroom. A very comfortable, easy room has been made for us. We particularly enjoy the view of the room from the garden at dusk, when a soft glow is given off by the electric light through the different sized windows. We also enjoy the play of both sunlight and moonlight through the two skylights onto the back wall. The large windows give expansive views of the garden, Killiney Hill and most importantly, the sky. The projection has made a very natural window seat, a comfortable place for enjoying the garden. The holistic effect, with the walls and floors all made from the same material, creates a feeling of ease and relaxation, a room for reading and listening to Lyric FM.

We had recently purchased and moved into De Brooke House when we first invited GKMP Architects to suggest alterations. We wanted to re-integrate the lower ground floor, which had been rented out as a separate apartment, and to refurbish the existing conservatory and the rear garden. GKMP came back with a more radical proposal, involving the demolition of the conservatory and the building of a new 2 storey extension with a dining room/sunroom above and a playroom below. Considerable consultation and design work was necessary in order to arrive at a solution that tied in seamlessly with the existing house. Overall, we are delighted with the finished project. We have a series of very usable new rooms with easy connections to the rest of the house. The quality of materials and the attention to light have provided us with a very successful addition to our home.

When we went to engage an architect to design an extension for our Victorian house our primary goals were to expand the space in the area that we as a family spent most of our time (kitchen/family room), provide extensive and discreet storage, a separate playroom and a library/study area. At the same time we wanted to preserve as much of the garden space and one of its main features – an old pear tree – thereby not reducing this important amenity. GKMP managed to meet all of our goals and, in many cases, exceeded our expectations. The design and choice of materials has resulted in a modern extension that blends well with the original house. The additional space has delivered very practical benefits and though we have lost actual garden space, it actually appears to be larger than originally. The use of natural materials both inside and outside the extension has created a living space that blends seamlessly with the immediate outside area. The efficient use of space within the overall site and the satisfactory accommodation of our immediate neighbours in the process was a direct consequence of the architect’s design and attention to our needs. Overall, the architect has provided an extremely practical and attractive design that has greatly enhanced our home and addressed the needs we set out at the start of this project.

After acquiring our family home in our ideal community there was the small point of modernizing a house on which virtually nothing had been done since its construction in the 1930’s. We approached the architects with a brief of both modernizing and enlarging the terraced house. Whilst we had our own thoughts on the type of house we would like, we gave a pretty open brief to the architects. I remember the day they presented their two sets of plans and immediately my wife and I agreed that one of the proposals exactly matched our dreams. The end result is a traditional looking terraced house from the front, but as soon as one enters the front door one is immediately struck by the light pouring into the house from the kitchen and living room glass doors which lead into the south facing garden. The finish throughout the house is a skilful blending of modern design with traditional features such as the original wooden floor upstairs and the original coving. Whilst the front is traditional, the rear aspect is ultra modern with sleek sand blasted walls blending into the green grass via a limestone paved patio.

In 2009 we purchased a wedge-shaped site on a laneway in Ranelagh. We asked our architects to design us a family home with a set of challenging requirements, principally making full use of the daylight while not seeing the overlooking properties and designing a space that would grow and change with our young family. The architects have, in our view, achieved these aims and provided us with a beautiful home. Their attention to detail and to our needs has resulted in a very functional, energy efficient home that maximizes the use of the site and provides us with the spaces we need.
